Details
This postcard shows the pier on Dzharylhach Island and the boat that took us there. Dzharylhach is the largest island in the Black Sea and, before the occupation, was a nature reserve home to many rare and endangered animals and plants. The island was inhabited by mouflons, deer, wild horses, and unique dolphins such as bottlenose and white-beaked dolphins. Unfortunately, in 2023, due to the island’s use as a military training ground by Russian forces, a fire lasting nearly a week destroyed much of the vegetation and wildlife. Additionally, the sandbar connecting the island to the mainland was filled in with sand, which harmed the local dolphin population. Overall, the island’s ecosystem was devastated, and Dzharylhach’s unique natural heritage has been lost.
